Residential road closures: Make payment of deposit to police a must

NST,Tuesday 23 November 2010

It is getting increasingly common for canopies to be erected on residential roads to celebrate a family event.

If it becomes impassable, motorists will have to either make a U-turn or reverse their cars on a road already made narrow by other vehicles parked by the roadside.

When such celebrations continue late into the night, many residents will be left cursing, especially when the music and announcements are still at full blast.

There should be some form of legislation to control such noise pollution as sleep deprivation can drive people insane and cause ugly scenes between neighbours.

Those who wish to hold such events must be made to pay a small deposit at the nearest police station and agree in writing that it will end by a certain time, say 11.00pm.

With some control in place, such celebrations will truly be a joyous occasion for all.
