Brain gain: Have good policies to retain talent

NST,Wednesday, January 12, 2011

Progressive nations welcome talent and attract people from all over the world by offering opportunities and level playing fields.

Malaysia can be proud that a large number of Malaysians are talented. Many are working abroad and making valuable contributions to their host countries.

If some of the more than 700,000 Malaysians living overseas at present were to return, they would be able to boost our economy by invigorating many of our industries with their expertise.

There has been much debate on the Malaysian diaspora.

Some have been perceived as having questionable loyalties while others have the distorted view that they are not welcome back in the country.

However, all the arguments should not ignore the fact that many of the talented Malaysians out there would be warmly received by all parties in the country.

Surely, at least one candidate can be found out of every 700? As such, Talent Corporation Malaysia should be able to woo back some 1,000 Malaysians over a reasonable period.

Efforts must also be made to ensure that the talents we have in the country are not alienated and all measures taken to retain them.

Ultimately, it is the sound policies of the government that will largely determine whether the talent pool in this country is replenished and leakage plugged.
