Pedestrian lights: Not always safe to cross

NST,Monday, January 17, 2011

The authorities install pedestrian lights at busy streets to make it easier to cross our roads.

However, it is dangerous to cross them until traffic on both sides has come to a halt. Some motorists may continue driving without noticing the change of lights.

Cars have mowed down people at pedestrian crossings, especially those without humps.

Motorcyclists sometimes zoom past vehicles that have slowed down or stop without considering the danger ahead.

Motorists who do give for pedestrians may be hit by a motorcyclist emerging from a blind corner.

Also, some pedestrian lights are faulty and need to be fixed. Some motorists ignore faulty pedestrian lights and these encourage others to do the same.

It is now so common that no one raises an eyebrow when motorcyclists beat red lights.

Also, some pedestrian lights are activated automatically and motorists often wonder whether it is necessary to stop when there are no pedestrians.
