Warning sound for electric vehicles needed

TS,Thursday April 29, 2010

According to media reports, transport laws will be amended soon to allow the use of electric
vehicles on public roads.
It was also reported that electric scooters are being assembled in Shah Alam and are set to
roll out in a few months.
Electric vehicles should be embraced, as normal engines running on fossil fuels are the main
cause of air and noise pollution.
My concern is that these electric vehicles may at times be too silent and pose a danger,
especially in quiet neighbourhoods.
As such, I would recommend that the law should require all electric vehicles to emit a recognisable
sound to warn others of their presence.
Of course, there is no need for all electric cars to roar like a Ferrari or electric bike to thunder
like a Harley Davidson.
Do bear in mind that these electric vehicles are no slow machines. The electric scooter, for example,
is designed for a top speed of 110kph.
