Many have not mastered the three Rs

TS,Monday April 19, 2010

In your report “Typing errors acknowledged in ministry portal,” (The Star, April 16) Deputy Finance
Minister Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussein said efforts would be made to ensure they do not recur.
It would not have occurred if either the typist or his supervisor can count.
I am no longer surprised to come across young adults who have not mastered the three
Rs – Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.
In 2007, I had a shock when training fresh graduates recruited to promote tourism. They were
asked to guess the total tourism receipts for the country.
One of them named a figure, which was not much higher than my annual income when
I was in a senior management position.
However, the real shock came when none of the participants could write RM44bil correctly
in figures! Some tried writing the figure from right to left and none placed a comma after three zeroes.
Having such graduates type or check figures is bound to produce work littered with errors.
