Enforcements we like to see

NST,Monday, October 25, 2010

Watching enforcement officers from the local authorities doing their rounds on streets can evoke mixed feelings for onlookers.

They are a welcome sight to those suffering from the excesses of selfish business operators, hoping that swift action will be taken.

They are, however, loathed by those who hold the view that these officers are out to accept gratuities for letting off operators who break the rules.

Whether it is the selfishness of business operators or the greediness of enforcement officers, there is inconvenience suffered by all members of the public is when roadside parking lots are illegally reserved.

It is common to find restaurants and stalls placing their chairs and tables on parking lots. A clay-pot chicken rice seller in the Pudu area even had the audacity to chain up the five-foot way in front of the restaurant to place tables and chairs there.

Allowing these business operators to carry on with impunity forces us to resign to the fact that we are stuck in such a state of degradation. However, if our local authorities are sincere, they should invite and reward the public for photo or video evidence.

The local authorities should also make it mandatory for all car repairs, accessories and tyre shops to pay as reserved bays for the roadside parking lots in front of their shops as other motorists are not allowed to park there.

Our goal towards a high-income nation includes efforts by government agencies to raise their efficiency in order to plug loopholes and increase revenue.
