Shopping for cars made easy at carnival – By Journalist Jade Chan

TS,Wednesday March 16, 2011

The Uptown Sunday Car Carnival in Damansara Uptown is all set to serve as a one-stop centre for selling and buying new and used cars, as well as related services like insurance, registration and financing schemes.

Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman launched the carnival that will be held every Sunday from 9am to 6pm at the Damansara Uptown Multi-Level Carpark at Jalan SS21/ 39, Petaling Jaya.

Roslan commended the organisers for their unique “one-stop centre” concept, but reminded them to properly manage the site’s cleanliness and traffic.

“The Uptown Sunday Car Carnival will complement the weekly PJ Car Mart that is held at PJ New Town (also known as PJ State), as the latter primarily features used cars but its site is quite congested,” he said.

“The management of the carnival here appears more systematic and organised, and I hope that it will remain that way throughout the subsequent carnivals.

“The carnival will cater to a different market as it is similar to an auto fair, and offers almost everything that is needed to acquire a car.”

Roslan said the Uptown Sunday Car Carnival could potentially grow to become a tourist destination in PJ.

The carnival is the brainchild of Uptown Sunday Automart managing director S. Isaac.

In addition to featuring a display of new and used cars for sale, there will be auctions for repossessed cars on selected Sundays.

Event partner AmBank will be on hand to facilitate transactions like loan application, insurance coverage and refinancing schemes.

There will also be car accessories and transport-related products and services on display, like battery-powered personal mobility vehicles.

Uptown Sunday Automart general manager YS Chan said the company is in the midst of getting more individuals and groups to display their used cars at the carnival.

“We foresee many individuals, used car dealers and car rental companies coming in as they can sell their used cars directly to the buyers,” he said.

“We will also be inviting the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Puspakom to operate a counter to provide greater convenience for the public.

“Owners who would like to sell their cars at the carnival can just drive here and pay RM30 per car for the parking space rental for the entire day.”

Chan said the company projected that there would be a rise from 300 to 15,000 cars to be displayed at the carnival over a five-year period, and that 20% of the vehicles would be sold.
