Royalty who make us proud

TS,Friday 1 April 2011

The photograph showing Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko in kneeling position on the floor talking to an elderly woman seated on the floor with her husband kneeling beside her (The Star, March 31) left a deep impression on me.

At the evacuation shelter, the royal couple rightfully put aside palace protocol. Their genuine concern has raised the status of the Chrysanthemum throne up by several notches.

The Japanese people have already shown to the world that they can remain civilised, courteous and disciplined in adversity. We should thank them for raising human dignity.

The rest of us can try to emulate their mannerisms but it will take some time for the initial faked courtesy to be replaced with genuine feelings.

It is customary for large organisations to train their staff on customer service, but forced greetings don’t work. Values can only be nurtured through good interaction between people, and this is something we are sorely lacking.

Some sections of our society are fond of promoting morality but are full of hatred and condemnation.

On the converse, we are warmed by others who have genuine concern for all Malaysians.

They include our royalty who are much admired for their wisdom, compassion, intelligence and brilliance. They make us proud to be Malaysian.

The editor felt it is more appropriate not to name names.

We have such royalties as His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor, Her Royal Highness the Sultanah of Johor, the Raja Muda of Perak and Tunku Zain Al-Abidin Muhriz of Negri Sembilan.
